The Priest Series – 2000-2002
This series of work marks the beginning of the artist’s examination of the extent to which religion is embedded with one’s sense of cultural identity. The sketches and paintings captured the dome shape of the figure of the priest dressed in his vestments, often sitting on a red box or at the altar of a church. They were influenced by drawings that the artist made in her copybook for religion class as an nine year old child. This work led to the later series of work with the artist’s communion dress which dealt with the loss of faith and how this loss alters one’s sense of identity.
